Here at the Microsoft WPC in Toronto, we prepared for an audience of 16,000.
How much time are you willing to put in to make a presentation great?
I recently coached a woman for a 10 min Tedx talk in Tokyo. For those 10 minutes, I would estimate that my client put in about 100 hours of prep. No doubt, the stakes for her were high and she had a lot of new material to develop…but she knocked it out of the park…and as a result, will save a lot of lives.
And isn’t that worth the work?
Prep for a presentation is like laying bricks of a foundation. The lessons you learn, the skills you gain, and the material you develop will be yours forever. Yes…you’ll need to brush up again before your next round, but it’s a bit like getting back on a bike. The muscle memory is strong.
You will never regret the time you put in preparing, but if you miss sections or make mistakes at the live event, you will always regret what you did not do. There is no “do over.”
Carve out the time.
you owe it to yourself
and you owe it to the material.
If you really have a message worth hearing, it needs to be prepared. Value doesn’t come from winging it. Value comes from caring deeply and caring deeply means you take the time to ensure you will knock it out of the park.
